Mars Rover: Off-World Mobility 2050 Delphi Report
How might life on Mars look like in the year 2050?
This project explores the future of humanity and off-world mobility, with a focus on the year 2050, by delving into Mars colonization and the advancements in global trends. This forward-looking study examines technological evolutions, and their applications in fields such as vertical farming and quantum computing, and envisions a sustainable future for both Earth and Mars. The project serves as a futurist exploration and design exercise, delving into humanity’s next significant advancements in off-world living and mobility.
This project provides a comprehensive future casting through 2050, employing the STEEPx method to assess global trends across political, social, technological, economic, and ecological domains. It identifies pivotal areas such as the societal push for planetary colonization, technological strides, economic implications of resource valuation, ecological threats like climate change, and the political ambitions for Mars colonization. Highlighting eight significant trends—from urban densification and virtual reality to space exploration and quantum computing—the analysis unfolds three scenarios ranging from optimistic Mars colonization with an Eco-energy Circle to challenging Earth conditions impacting Martian settlement efforts. A detailed scenario showcases a day in the life of a SpaceX manager, illustrating the practical use of advanced technologies like AR/VR, AI, sustainable mining, and 3D printing in establishing a human presence on Mars. This vision integrates technological innovations with environmental and societal challenges, forecasting a future where Earth's issues drive the exploration and development of Mars, culminating in a holistic design that caters to the needs of Mars' early inhabitants and underscores the potential for interplanetary living and mobility.
